Those Darn Accordions rock the squeezebox

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/11/05/DDVU1AEIIK.DTL&type=music

"Blasting "Lady of Spain," nine accordion players burst into Figaro restaurant in North Beach, startling diners mid-cannoli.

"Hello, everybody, we're Those Darn Accordions!" shouted Tom Torriglia, after the crowd's surprise melted into clapping and picture taking....

I highly recommend that you read the article that Crypto from the Burning Man tribe brought to my attention...WONDERFUL!

Sex advice from accordion players

Here's the link:

http://www.nerve.com/regulars/sexadvicefrom/accordionplayers/

Some highlights:

How has being an accordion player improved your sexual technique?
I'm a better multitasker. You learn to do different things with your left and right hands. If you have to sing too, then you're doing four things at once.

How has being an accordion player improved your abilities in bed?
Well, my oral skills have definitely improved. [laughs]. I play the claviola.

Is there a type of girl that goes for accordion players?
It's funny, because I also play theremin. More girls seem to be into the theremin and go, "Oh, that's sexy" after a show than when I'm playing claviola or accordion. But Josh, whom you'll be interviewing, has a bright orange accordion that girls are into. I think it's the color. I don't know, I think girls just feel sorry for guys who play accordions. Like "this guy plays accordion, he must be a real dork." And there's an attractiveness to guys who are dorks. Dork is in.

How much masturbation is too much masturbation?
I don't think there's too much masturbation, unless it's interfering with your accordion practice.

What's the best thing anyone has ever done to you in bed?
Just made me feel open — letting me say whatever I want, letting me explore my fantasies, making me feel like I could just be myself. Oh, and letting me dress up for them in whatever turns them on, like heels. Or accordion costumes.

What's a good way to get someone up to your apartment?
If I really wanted to put on the heavy pressure, I could say something like, "I wrote a song for you. Would you like to come up? I can play it for you."

On accordion?
I don't know if I'd play it on accordion. I might play it on guitar. Accordion may be a little much.

What if the girl was really into accordion?
Then I definitely would. I've met a few girls who claimed to be like that. I don't now if they were saying it just to be eccentric. It's a little suspicious. I've met girls who say, "It makes me week in the knees." But I don't quite trust it. I think they're just trying to be different. My accordion is safety orange. I think that probably helps.

Why the accordion?

For me, I was maneuvered into it when I was 7.

Above my Dad's store there was a guy, Mr Fetzer... he owned and taught "every instrument". My Mom told me to go see him and pick an instrument to learn... but no drums... too loud... no piano... to big for our small apartment.

So I went room to room looking at hundreds of instruments and Mr Fetzer steered me away from everything except for the accordion (it was at it's the peak of popularity then, in the mid 50's).

It's portable!

You can play everything on it!

It sounded good to me.

Just as I was getting the hang of playing it... Elvis came on the scene with his bad boy sexy image and guitar. So there I was with an "establishment Lawrence Welk" accordion and my friends were picking up the "bad boy, sexy guitar".

(Elvis killed the accordion, the Beatles buried it. When I was a kid, the local music stores had accordions lined up on the walls like they have guitars lined up right now... imagine that!)

I guess I was stubborn... I spent too many hours practicing to give the accordion up... so I stuck with it and I'm glad I did!

So... I'm interested... how did you get started playing the accordion?
On-line Sheet Music

So, I'm looking for some free on-line sheet music that would work well with the accordion.

I saw a guy on youtube.com play video game music on the accordion, and it really worked well. So I found this, but I haven't tried anything from it yet.

http://individual.utoronto.ca/auyeun/vgsheetmusic.html

I also found this:

http://www.crazyattic.com/jmh/music.htm

It has the sheet music from the movie Labyrinth, though, so far, the only song I think would really work very well on the accordion is "As the World Falls Down"

Does anyone else have any links for similar sheet music peices? I'm curious about the sheet music from Tangerine Dream's songs in the movie Legend.

I got this fantastic used Stanelli Prince for my birthday--HUZZAH!!!!!!! (it's a monumental one--hence the instrument)--I love the thing--so excited (sorry--I just had to share that, and figured it waren't so bad a place to do it, so thanks for indulging my extraordinary exhuberance.)
Does anyone else have a similar instrument? I'm interested in knowing a bit more about them since it was damaged during shipping, and I already had to take it all the way down to Union City to have it fixed back to perfection by a guy down there, so I'm interested in knowing any quirks. Thanks! :D

So I recently started playing the accordion, and want to take it with me to BM. But... that seems like a bad idea, right?
The playa dust will probably get inside and damage the reeds, or will it be ok?
I'm sure it's been done before, but does anyone have any experience this? Any advice?
Or should I just not take it.
(My accordion is a used IORIO, not sure how old it is)
Thanks!

boston area anyone?

anyone near boston or have any accordion playing friends in boston?

i just got a diatonic sofia mari 12 bass accordion and i love accordions, but I don't know how to play them, esp. diatonic accordions.

i want to learn to play more than anything or at least have someone give me an idea of how to read accordion music or provide me with links where I can teach myself.

this is a strange looking accordion and i'm finding much more difficult than piano accordions.

thanks a bunch!

My father was an accordian player a long time ago. I love the sound and energy it adds to a song. I've been thinking about learning how to play. What is the best accordian for a beginner?

Besides doing the standard, "Hi, I'm new, and I've just started to learn the accordion" post. I found this great piece of Accordion art by Naomi Johanna Nowak. It's absolutely beautiful, so I had to upload it to this group, I hope you like it.

http://www.naomi.se/ - That's her website.

Also, does anyone else live in the Southeast? I'm having a doozy of a time finding a place that works on accordions in this so-called "Music City."

i have often thought about learning this fun instrument! i think it would fit right in with all of the other things i love to do. besides, it would complete my ensemble of insanity.

how easy/hard is it to learn? would i be wise to take it on all by myself or look to seek the assistance of an experienced accordian player?

I didn't get to see her play, but doesn't it warm your heart that somewhere, out there, punk rock baby dykes are taking up the accordian?

AccordionFest is an annual all accordion extravaganza sponsored by 21 Grand (which is not at 21 Grand, but a few blocks away at 416 25th x Broadway) This year, the Tom Waits Ensemble and the Accordion Works Trio will be performing at the AccordionFest on Saturday August 6th alongside other accordion acts: Esmerelda Strange the Mad Maggies. Esmerelda Strange describes her music as an eclectic blend of Eastern European, Latin American, Urban Folk, Punk Rock, Rockabilly, and Klezmer music. The Mad Maggies are an 8-person accordion, saxaphone, trompet, tuba, guitar and percussion band, and identify their music as world-inspired eclectic or "power folk."

I don't know how hot I am yet, only 2 years old as an accordionista. I have a nice little 48 bass musette. But I can play a few polkas, waltzes, schmaltzy latin tunes and Xmas carols. I love gypsy jazz and swing.

I hope to make friends with you.

Looking for an accordion player in Los Angeles!

Hello.
I am looking for an accordion player!
This is for an ongoing project. The music is strongly influenced by world music, so you must dig that sound. The influences are Eastern Europe (Hungarian, Balkan…), Romany (Gypsy), Middle-Eastern, Tango and some Asian elements too. All of that with Tribal Percussion grooves
(Think Dead Can Dance meets NIN gets hijacked by crazy Bulgarian circus)
This is for a long-term collaboration.
We are all professional musicians so please be the same :)
Thank you
